To Arms! Core Rulebook

ADD TO WISHLIST >

V1.1 update released in 2018.Jan.21

To Arms! is an easy and fast ruleset for historical games. This core rulebook focus on the ancient part but the rules can be used for 3000BC~1865AD.

The book is written in simple English. It's very easy to read and understand. Diagrams in each key step guide you how to play the game.

The featured Order of Activation makes the game feel like a RTS game. Not I-Go-U-Go, no PIPs. All the troops have chance to move in every turn.

The game length is about 1 Hour. You only need A Tape Measure and Some D6 Dice. Almost no counters or markers are needed. No chart looking, most of the combat is judged by Roll-Off. Figures are individually based and formed in ranks and files. If you want to play with DBx bases, that's also fine. You just need some markers to track the casualty.

We only have 1 page of quick reference sheet.

We also provide the information for new army creating. You can write your own armylists.

Overall, it's a easy and fast ruleset. It's good for beginners. Experienced players can also have funs. To Arms! is not a highly realistic battle simulation but a game of leisure and fun.

So the Chinese version costs nothing while the English version costs $10... that seems a bit... off.

The Chinese version is set free because that was a promise to my friends. However, few Chinese player downloaded it. They think GW is the best and all the others are lame.

Hello again Wenhan. A Question. You give a bonus to troops with loose order (aka war bands, barbarian hordes) by their ability to expand. What about the benefits of close order drilled troops against the formerly mentioned? Did you incorporate them to melee bonuses (e.g. +1 against infantry, but then why triarii don't have such a bonus?) or to morale (e.g.ranks)?

Hi Gerasimos:
1. The main weapon of Triarii is spear so it only has a bonus against cavalry
2. Veteran or elite troop's melee profile is about +3 (including all +X against XXX)
3. Close order troops normally have better morale and fighting profiles
4. Loose order troops expand during hand to hand combat will reduce their extra ranks so if they lose the melee, it will be very dangerous.

my assumption is that the loose order troops can quickly maneuver and surround the enemy, give them chances to win the melee in next turn but it's risky.

Hello Wenhan. I believe you have to clarify about AP's loss. An infanty troop with 2 APs in it's profile and 4 casualties has 0 APs for the rest of the game ??? Losses of the previous turn count only? Losses of the current turn count only? What is the case?
Regards

Hi Gerasimos, current turn only.
Let me use a simple situation to explain this: Your opponent's infantry should have 2APs when it is activated but if you shoot it before its activation and dealt damage, it will lose APs. 1-2 casualties made it disrupted or disorder so it can only move once or quickly shoot back. 3-4 casualties will cause further chaos so it can't do anything. I designed it to allow players using missile fire to stop the enemy from charging.
In the end of the turn, all the casualties will be removed so current turn only.

I see this is in the Top 100. Is there a review for this anywhere on the net? I cannot find one.

I guess it's impossible for you to find it because this is a new set of rules. What do you want to know about it? I can answer as much as I can.

What is the Scale? I mean as in figures to men.
How big is the average size army?
What is the ground Scale?

Hi Andrew, 1 heavy foot represents 40 men, 1 light foot or cavalry represents 20 men. A normal army contain about 10 troops, about 120 miniatures in total. 1 inch on the table represents 25 meters.
If you leave your email I can send a design note to you, which recorded some of my thoughts.
Best wishes!
Frank

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
